CHARACTER

Name: Lino Nieri
Canon/OC: OC
Journal: imbroccata
Race: Human
Nationality: Antivan
Occupation: Crow
Division: laughs
Mage or Not: Hedge mage
Age: 38

History

Lino was born to a family of good standing in Antiva, but his parents were in a civil dispute with another family. His mother, Caterina, was an artist who specialized in glassworks, while his father Yago was a banker with aspirations to break into politics. It was this venture that put the Nieri family at odds with the Barros family. Eugenia and Pol Barros took out a contract with the Crows to eliminate not only their political competition, but competition over an estate that the Nieri family were looking to buy.

After the Crows killed Caterina and Yago, the then 10-year-old Lino was given a choice: join the Crows or join his parents in death. He chose the former. 28 years later, he's still alive, still a Crow, and very very good at what he does.

Personality

Laconic, but not entirely stoic, Lino doesn't like to speak unless he has something vital to say. That is, something he deems vital to say, which is wholly subjective. He might not consider warning you about a trap to be vital unless your continued existence benefits him, or he might speak at length about your stupidity, because it's vital for him to express it since it makes him feel better. He is not much of a conversationalist, and his demeanor varies from no-nonsense to long-suffering. Swearing is, apparently, also considered vital.

He is also something of a pragmatist, which results in him doing what he believes will yield success, regardless of morality or loyalty. An ends-justify-the-means type of guy. He likes to be underestimated, though that doesn't often happen. Due to his overall stature and bearing, people tend to assume exactly the right level of competency from him, which only benefits him about 50% of the time. He's willing to play a long game instead of opting for instant gratification, though sometimes impatience does get the better of him in the moment. He might have a long-term plan, but act on instinct within the scope of it so long as it doesn't jeopardize the end goal. Though he appears to be solely motivated by money, he takes some secret satisfaction or joy in the work he does.

In most things he is not an adrenaline junkie, except when it comes to the hunt. It is while hunting that he is in his element, removed from the inanities of so-called civilized life and reduced to a baser drive. He enjoys being alone, travels light and doesn't keep many personal items that don't serve a purpose. He doesn't create sentimental bonds to items, or to animals, and it seems likely that holds for people, too. He doesn't buy into romantic entanglements, and though he doesn't shy away from sating his physical desires, he doesn't shit where he eats. AKA, he fucks, but he isn't gonna fuck anyone he has to see on the regular.

Opinions & Affiliations

The Chantry: Don't care.
The Qun: Good weapons, but otherwise don't give a fuck.
Mage/Templar War: Lucrative, but otherwise don't care.
Thedosian race relations: Different shapes of people, they all die the same.

Relations-wise, he doesn't really give a fuck about anyone but the Crows, and even that's contingent on his status as one of them. What's the point in giving a shit about someone you might end up getting paid to kill?

Strengths & Weaknesses

Best at: Killing, hunting, tracking, getting paid
Worst at: Empathy, compassion, being any shade of a good person

Lino's fighting skills are well-rounded and he's competent with many different types of weapons and in various unarmed combat styles, but he specializes in spears and staves. Though he is a hedge mage, he rarely uses magic and on those rare occasions it's simple things like minor explosions or concussive blasts. His magical ability is his weakest attribute.

Even though he's not much of a talker, he's conversant in the most used lingua franca across Thedas. Antivan, Ander, Orlesian, Trade, and Rivaini. He doesn't speak Qunlat, Tevene, Elvish, or Ciriane. Who the fuck even speaks Ciriane anyway?

His connection with the Crows can be seen as either an asset or a liability, as the reputation of the Crows attest to his skills and history of success, but it also means that if he continues to work as a Crow after joining Riftwatch, he could potentially take a contract on an ally or someone within the Inquisition itself. The Crows will not offer any resources to either Lino or Riftwatch.

Inventory

Other than convenient hunting knives or daggers, the only weapon that Lino cares enough about to have with him at all times is his boar spear. It's possibly the only thing he even remotely has a sentimental attachment to, though he's been through at least three different ones in the past decade.

Motivation

Convenience, and a recruiter.
